We are living in a time where the issue of gay marriage has been brought to the fore front of the world stage. For the first time in the history of this nation we had a president of the United States publically declare his personal support for gay marriage. President Barack Obama announced his historic shift May 19, 2012 to ABC News. The following year Jun 26, 2013 - In a 5-4 ruling, the United States Supreme Court justices struck down the Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA), signed into law by President Clinton in 1996 declaring it unconstitutional. The DOMA defined marriage being between a man and a woman. Interestingly one the same date two years later June 26, 2015 the United States Supreme Court ushered the nation into a new law of the land where marriage was redefined to include same sex marriage. Justices Antonin Scalia, Samuel Alito, and John Roberts all filed dissents. Justice Clarence Thomas joined Scalia's dissent, and joined Alito's in part, while Roberts joined Scalia's in part. . By a 5-4 ruling, Justices Elena Kagan, Sonia Sotomayor, Stephen Breyer, and Ruth Bader Ginsburg joined Kennedy's majority opinion.
